Our website www.sjsa.ab.ca has the full poem - click on stories in the top menu bar. Then scroll down through the stories until you find The Battle of Maldon". It's all there.

So I've been trying to find the full text version of what we had to memorize and it doesn't seem to exist in anything online. Is there any way it could be put up on here??

This is great! The ability to have a base camp, and then explore all around the local range sounds fantastic!

I've taken my family twice up the Cline River and out over Sunset Pass (the second time with fresh snow all through the pass and subsequent meadows) which has built fantastic memories for all of us. Two years ago we visited Alumni and former staffer Paul Nordahl to complete the Chilkoot trail together with his son joining us as well for some amazing vistas and challenging trails.

I would love to go through the Methye again, and was disappointed to hear it was run by a limited group this Summer. can't say I'd be as thrilled going in reverse and carrying everything UP the valley mind you. La Loche to Fort MacMurray would be short, yet challenging enough. My family might even continue on home by water just to see the weir on the Roche River. We have taken to kayaking since these world class rapids are at our doorstep now this year. But still I'm planning a trip for the Summer of 2013 (or maybe 2012) down the Nahani without paying the crazy guide fees. Are you up for that one Sherwood? (Or anyone else?)

A third idea for living memories is to take on the advertising for SJ pub nights in major cities. I know this has happened spontaneously at times. The problem, of course is getting the word out.

Pub night might need one local person to organize -- verify hours, book a room if there's enough people.

Meanwhile, if anyone is planning a pub night, drop Barbara a line and get the word out.

One way to do this would be for MM to issue, say, in January a call for proposals for trips, and people who were willing to organize could step forward.

Another idea is to put up a questionaire and people could indicate what sort of trips and how long, and when they could go.

Going away on trips, and not telling me. Sniff. Oh well, I was up to my ears in transplanting anyway.

I like the idea of trips. I think there needs to be a mix of types and lengths and difficulties.

I tried getting something going with some Selkirk alumni, but there no one wanted to do one of more than 2-3 days, and traveling to Manitoba for a short trip is not of interest to me.

I can see merit in a 1 week fall trip, or a two week canoe trip. Most people can't get more time off than that. Hikes are the most flexible -- you can accommodate almost any number. Canoe trips have a larger travel component from Alberta to get to a good location. And you have to move canoes around. Possibly something worked out with CRCO for canoes.

For me, the 2-3 day trip isn't interesting. There is only time to get sore, and not time enough to get tough, not enough time to get into 'trip mode' I'd love to do a week in Willmore, and walk the Persimmon Range again. I'd love to go up the Watheman, and down the Geike, although that may be pushing the two week bit.

1972: I remember loading the canoes hurriedly in the rain. I was only off the plane from Southern California only 48 hours, with most of that being spent on the van trip North. In the confusion our canoe got all the tins of SPAM intended for the entire expedition and all the instant mashed potatoes. The extra weight of the SPAM, and my complete lack of experience rowing a canoe left us lagging behind. Just before pull in time, the rain turned into fog and we were separated from the rest of the canoes. Somehow we found the shore and landed. I was amazed that the master in our canoe got a fire going with everything dripping wet. Soon a bucket of stew from SPAM and Potato Flakes was hovering over the fire, but it boiled over putting out the flame. We didn't have any sort of seasoning, and the meal was just barely cooked through. There was no bleach for the drinking water and it never boiled for tea. We also didn't have any toilet paper which I was soon desperately seeking. I spent most of the night crouched in the scrub birch. I also learned that night what poison sumac looks like, and what it feels like.

Looking back I was far more concerned about the quality of the food and lack of toiletries than being separated from the group.
